My freezer is stocked to the brim omg you guys. Lemon shortbread, pecan snowballs, chocolate snowballs, oat fudge bars, peanut butter chocolate bars and millionaire shortbread with still a few treats to go for the season.

Since it’s just Derek and I here, these will mostly be gifted and shared with friends and family but I don’t know if I even know enough people to give them to at this point haha.

I’ve really been enjoying making desserts though. I didn’t share that many sweet recipes this year so it’s been a lot of fun!

It reminds me of the old days of getting into coconut and cashew-based raw desserts, which were my favourite thing to create when I started my site 10 years ago. YES 10 years!! I think the official date is January 21, the day I published my very first post back in 2013.

I went into the web archives and my first post was about a 3 day cleanse I was doing HAHAHA. I also shared all my workouts from that week. Oh god. I then went on to post a daily recap of the cleanse.

Luckily today, words like cleanse and detox are no longer part of my vocabulary. Sometimes it’s hard to believe that was me.

The first recipe I posted was on January 26, 2013 and was my vegan dragon bowls, which are still on the site today and remain a favourite.

Anyways maybe I’ll do a little something to celebrate the official 10 years in January. It’s pretty wild I’ve been doing this 10 years even though I’m a whole different person than 10 years ago, even 5 years ago.

The fact that I’m still doing it is all thanks to you though, so thanks for sticking around over the years. ilysm ❤️

I think I'll stay in holiday mode until January 3rd, which is the day after my birthday. My 40th birthday omg. I'll talk more about that later, I've never done much for my bday with it being right after Christmas and New Year's but I guess 40 is kind of a big one.⠀

I’m gonna pack every bit of Christmas I can into the next couple weeks because I truly love this time of year and it always whips by so fast, you know? So, our tree is up, I've been baking lots, getting some gifts ready, listening to Christmas music and just generally trying to stay warm and cozy.

Tough week! I’m sore haha. I can see how you need to build up slowly when combining strength and endurance in this way.

This week was lower body on Monday: back squats, RDL, reverse lunges and hip thrust. Tuesday was sprints. I started these at 800 m 4 weeks ago and worked down to 10 x 100 m and 10 x 50 m today. They felt a bit rough after Monday’s strength work.

Wednesday was upper body: bench, pendlay, shoulder press, DB row, lateral raise and face pull.

LISS on Thursday, 35 minutes this week. I decided to bike this week rather than run to give my ankle a rest (recovering from a sprain).

Friday the longest and hardest day of the week. Full body strength to start: deadlift, strict press, lat pull down, biceps and triceps.

Then week 4 of this terrible workout:

10 rounds
100 m walking lunge
100 m sled pull
100 m run

Into 15 minute zone 2 run. Yes, 1000 m of lunging, haha. I’m pretty sure my fellow gym people are wondering what I’m doing lunging and sled pulling back and forth for over an hour haha.

This workout started with 4 rounds in week 1, then 6, 8, 10. Would not recommend jumping into 10 rounds haha.

Finally Saturday, 50 minute LISS run, 10 min cool down run. This was a “back off” from last weeks 1:10 as I’ve been assured next week things will be getting more intense and include some double days.

This wrapped up 4 weeks of hybrid training. I’m excited to see this training through and see what happens because I haven’t trained for anything specific in a long time.

I guess the last thing was CrossFit but there are so many different things to work on and it can be hard to quantify progress at times, then the open or a competition comes and it all goes out the window anyways haha. There are so many variables.

Anywayyysss - heading to Mexico today but will have a gym so I plan to get all my workouts in.

I also didn’t share a new recipe this week so I guess I’m a fitness account now. K byeeee.

A couple months ago I decided to try some new fitness adventures and signed up for a half-marathon, marathon and two triathlons (sprint and Olympic distances) in 2023. There might be some half-distance trail races in there too but I haven’t signed up yet.

I didn’t want to give up my lifting & strength so I’ll be doing both and I thought I’d share how it goes as I progress down this hybrid-style training route.

I’ve done one half about 5 years ago but I didn’t train and it was awful. I’ve never run farther than that. Last year I ran 100 km a month for a year, while continuing strength training, but I wasn’t doing any structured training for running or had any goals. Before the 100 km a month challenge I hadn’t run anywhere near that in probably 15 years.

I didn’t run much between January and October of 2022, a bit, but it was mostly just the gym 5 days a week training functional bodybuilding-style.

I’d always wanted to try a marathon and I’ll be 40 in a month so what better time to finally give it a try!

As for triathlon, it’s been 20 years since I’ve done one, I don’t have a bike yet and I haven’t swam regularly in just as long so that’s going to be the real adventure here.

This recap was from week 3 of starting to train for both strength and endurance. So far, I’m lifting 3 days and running 3 days.

It’s seemed like less volume than I was used to but I’ve also been pretty wiped by the end of the week. I’m getting used to doing less at the gym but really making the most of it and I have been really feeling every session (aka sore af).

I’m enjoying everything so far and it feels really good to be taking on new fitness challenges!

Hope you’ll follow along. I plan to share a little update once a week but I’m not the best at staying on top of social so we’ll see lol.

I’ve been thinking about what I want to share here, aside from the fun stuff like travel and workouts. There are some messages I believe in and always have since I started my blog, though haven’t always lived them myself.

I’ve been through the dieting, the deadlines, starting over and over, disordered eating, the anxiety over my weight and having self-worth tied to it and the binge-restrict cycles. Now that I’ve been out the other side for a few years, I don’t want anyone to have to live that way.

It pains me to think of the years of life I lost consumed by it. I don’t want anyone to carry that regret.

Here are some of those messages.

Help young women develop solid self-worth earlier in life. I struggled with this in my teens & early 20’s. I wish I could have told myself I was doing great and was as good as anyone else.

Healthy habits from a place of self-care bc you deserve it, not in any kind of restrictive or forceful way. Sticking to habits can be easy and feel good, not stressful or like you’re always failing.

Helping women know they can eat, it’s safe to eat, healthy to eat & there’s no reason to be fearful of food.

Listening to your body and trusting yourself over external input. Knowing you are ok and that you are the expert on you.

Finding food freedom so you can live without constantly thinking about food or your body. Being at peace and at ease around food. Being able to make choices that feel good between things you need or want at any given time.

Not judging yourself or others.

Preparing nutritious food as a form of self-care.

Respecting your body even when you may not love it. It’s ok to not love it but appreciating and respecting it and what it does for you is important.

A holistic & easy-going approach to health. You don’t have to be perfect to be healthy.

Not demonizing foods or causing more anxiety around food and health based on what you “should” be doing or not doing. You are doing fine. Some foods are nutritious & some are not as nutritious but they’re all just foods.

Being a loving, safe and accepting place where anyone & everyone is welcome.

Bedtime thoughts ❤️ When we share openly about our pains, struggles and vulnerabilities it teaches others it’s ok to be imperfect. It normalizes feelings that are often not talked about. If there’s something you’re struggling with, guaranteed there are people out there having the exact same struggles, wondering why they feel that way. Sharing them lets people know they’re not alone.

Why do we want to project an image of perfection? Ego mostly, I guess? We armour ourselves by hiding who we really are, but I think it hurts us all when do.

If you love and accept yourself enough to share your pains and struggles, you allow others to believe that they’re good enough too. That they’re ok. That it’s ok to accept themselves just the way they are. That those struggles and big, overwhelming feelings are totally normal.

So, can we just get them all out in the open so we can breath and be comforted in knowing we are not alone with them?

Speaking of big overwhelming feelings, I had horrible anxiety last night thinking about what I’d posted here over the last few days and wanted to run and immediately delete everything, never post on stories again and just hide away, but it passed and I’m still here.

It’s hard to describe but like a crushing self-doubt of who I am as a person and how people see me, really for no reason at all. I don’t actually feel that way but I think a lot of us might get like that sometimes. Or maybe not, I don’t know haha. Let’s discuss…isn’t that the point of this post lol?

Anyways, I really want to do my best to show up here authentically, that’s really all I wanted to say.

What if we celebrated every little thing we accomplished? It's so easy to offer words of encouragement to others but so hard hard to give them to ourselves. Compassion and empathy is easy for the people in my life but myself? Nope, doesn't apply to me. I can't see the checkmarks on my to-do list, only the items that remain. I could and should be doing more.⠀

We're so hard on ourselves. If you're like me you often have the feeling you aren't doing enough and rarely give yourself credit. In fact, I don't think I've ever truly recognized anything I've achieved in life. Nothing is good enough.⠀
⠀
I often feel like I'm lacking in some way. The feeling is always there, just chipping away in a little corner of my mind and squeezing just tight enough around my chest cause a certain heaviness and restriction. ⠀
⠀
That being said, I'm softer on myself that I used to be. I don't put much pressure on myself these days. This can be a good and bad thing I guess. We receive a lot of messaging that you have to be progressing, growing, moving forward and if you're not, there's something wrong with you. But what if I don't want to move forward? What if I don't want to accomplish anything? What if I'm perfectly happy just where I am? ⠀

Why do we always feel like we need to be doing more and why is "productivity" so wrapped up in self-worth.⠀
⠀
Even self-improvement books tell us that your life is your responsibility, have the courage to chase your dreams, don't fall short on your greatness, believe in yourself and you can do anything, change your habits, change your life, manifest, manifest, manifest. ⠀
⠀
We need constant resistance against societal norms to say, I don't want to grow, I'm happy here, exactly where I am. If that's what you want, of course, because I would always encourage others to go after their dreams but if you don't have some lofty goal, that's ok. You still matter. You still have value.⠀
⠀
I'm rambling. I sometimes have a hard time articulating things so maybe it makes sense and maybe it doesn't lol.⠀
